Chard travelled up to Wells this Saturday gone for their third game of the season to face last season's 2nd placed Mid Somerset.

Chard fronted a fresh-faced team including new players Rose and Evie Trafford with several players missing from the starting line-up this week but were hoping to secure some more points for the table having narrowly missed out on 3 points the previous week.

Chard's hopes looked to be quashed when Mid Somerset broke the score line within the first 8 minutes of the game with an almost perfect short corner routine that saw the ball deflected past Chard's defence and keeper. Mid Somerset continued to press hard, pushing all of their players up on attack and were quick to secure a second and then a third goal despite strong defensive clearances from the chard back four and keeper. Chard were not out of the game however, and a miss-placed defensive hit the Mid Somerset back line was intercepted by wide midfielder Emma Cridland who took on the keeper and scored Chard's first goal of the game. Chard were quick to follow this up with a second goal. Having been awarded with a short corner, Chard took advantage of this and midfielder Tess Down's strike on goal was deflected into the top corner of the net.

Chard broke for half time with the confidence of pulling the game back and this certainly showed by the improvement of the hockey on display during the second half. Chard went from being 3-0 down to looking the dominant team on the pitch with attacking drives from the midfield and forwards looking to be rewarded. Chard's 3rd goal of the game started from a well-placed defensive hit from Lorraine Szczepanski which was picked up by Cridland and driven down the pitch. Cridland crossed to forward Kerryn Mullis who placed the ball between the keeper's legs to bring the score to 3-3.

Mid Somerset were left frustrated from several short corner chances which were not converted to goals due to fantastic defending from Chard's back four. Great run-outs from Natalie Slade and a goal-line clearance from Zoe Harris kept the home side at bay. Evie Trafford, Abbi Wheaton and long standing vice-captain Amy Goss were all unlucky not to be rewarded with goals but Chard's continued pressure soon paid off when they were rewarded with another short corner. Tess Down again stepped up and her straight strike from the top of the D slammed straight passed the keeper into the bottom corner of the goal. Chard were now 4-3 up.

Unfortunately for the visiting side, the victory was not meant to be as in the last 5 minutes of the game Mid Somerset found their fourth goal from a deflection in the D; however, being the underdogs going into the game, Chard were happy to have fought back from being 3-0 down to take another point in the fight to remain up this season.

Thanks go to match sponsors Albert Goodman and congratulations go to player of the match Zoe Harris.
