Chard Victorious as Minehead Withdraw

On Saturday 7th November, Chard Ladies 1st team faced Minehead 2nd's at Holyrood Academy in wet and windy conditions. Following pitch inspections in the morning, and an erroneous sweeping of leaves it was concluded that the pitch was safe to play and the match was to go ahead.

Chard started strong and took the lead within the first five minutes as a result of a skillful run down the left wing by Maya Preston who crossed the ball into the path of Rachel Ireland-Jones who then slotted the ball into the back of goal. Only a few minutes later Chard doubled there lead with Amy Goss poking the ball over the line, thanks to an assist from returning forward, Ruth Butcher.

Minehead forced their way back into the game as their midfield split the Chard defence and an impressive strike at goal hit the roof of the net. Moments later Minehead were awarded a penalty flick because a Chard defender stopped the ball on the line with their foot. However, discussions between umpires concluded that there was a foul by Minehead prior to this offence and Chard had a lucky escape as a 16 yard hit was awarded. Chard took advantage of this stroke of luck and quickly made it three one with a well-executed short corner that saw Ruth Butcher rocketing the ball into the corner of the goal. Chard got another two by half time, from forwards Lorraine Szecpanski and Ruth Butcher.

Determine not to let their lead slip Chard continued the second half in the same fashion as they finished the first and quickly made it 6 through another strike from Ireland-Jones. A strong game in defence from Lou Wrightson and Katy Jones ensured that Minehead were not given many chances in front of the goal. Chard's midfield and forward's continued pushing forward and were rewarded with another two goals from Ireland-Jones. Minehead, however, managed to claw a goal back as a result of three short corners in succession. Chard responded with another surge forward from Butcher and Ireland-Jones. Ireland-Jones again slotted the ball into the net as Szepanski collided with the keeper and remained down due to a historic back injury. During the commotion of the injury Minehead decided that enough was enough and they did not want to continue with the game because the pitch was unsafe to play. With 16 minutes left on the clock, Minehead left the pitch and the game finished with a 9.2 victory to Chard Ladies.

Girl of the match was Rachel Ireland-Jones for her five goals and determination in midfield.
Thanks to umpires Tina O'Connell and Chris Long.
