AGM

When I became Club President 2 years ago, I spoke of the end of an era, referring to Jim Sainsbury standing down as President after almost 20 years and the retirement from hockey of long time Club Chair Ros Clemmans.

What I think we are faced with for next season and the years ahead is a new chapter and challenge for the Club with the retirement of Andy Swain as Junior Development Officer after the best part of 14 years along with Gary Wheaton as a long standing junior coach. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude for the steady flow of youngsters who learned to play hockey under their guidance and the progression of so many of them to play for our senior teams. Andy and Gary are leaving behind an impressive legacy and one which I hope other members will feel inspired to take forward, perhaps some of those who benefited from the junior development programme themselves. The work to continue where Andy and Gary have left off starts now.

On behalf of the whole Club I would like to thank all members of the Committee for their input over the past year and those who have indicated their willingness to continue for another year. We are fortunate indeed to have such an energetic and enthusiastic Chair in Hannah who sets a fine example to others.

Congratulations to the Men’s 1st team on their 3rd place finish the foundation of which was their fantastic 19 game unbeaten run ( is this a Club record?)

I know the Ladies’ teams endured a tough season in terms of results but there was never any shortage of players willing to play and that is a credit to their team spirit and commitment. In my experience it is easier to be motivated to play when you are winning and harder when the results aren’t going your way.

I mentioned Jim Sainsbury at the start of this and must do so as I finish. He has umpired for many years now and did a stint as umpiring coordinator for the Club. He has decided to put away his whistle and cards and retire from umpiring so I will end by thanking Jim on behalf of the Club for his many years of service.
