On a day that saw Gregor Townsend lead Scotland to victory over England in the 6 Nations, it was an equally ambitious tactical masterclass from skipper Alan Cheffey that saw Chard 3rds give Sidmouth and Ottery B a thumping at fort Holyrood. Spending many a sleepless night formulating his cunning plan, Cheffey, with a tired yet determined look on his face, installed Durgan Cooper and Richard Jones up front and it was their scintillating pace and lethal finishing that blasted Chard into an unassailable 4-0 lead within the first 20 minutes, both scoring twice. It was a much improved performance from Chard who had struggled for fluency over the past few weeks. Who would have thought that stopping the ball cleanly and passing accurately would lead to such a performance? With Ryan Lewis providing the legs and skill in the midfield, Chard maintained their first half dominance and it was Cheffey, on a rare sortie forward who slotted in goal number 5 with a cheeky tap-in. Sidmouth and Ottery did start to come into the game more in the second half and some excellent saves from keeper Kacey Hibbard and resolute defending from Riley Millet and George Broomfield kept their goal tally to just 1. Rollo Squire opened up his account with 2 well taken goals in the second half and it was Richard Jones, rolling back the years who eventually completed his hat-trick with a 'deliberate' low flick from a short corner. An excellent debut performance from Alec Evans completed Chard's dominance. When the whistle blew, the record crowd erupted and as they departed, having been provided excellent value for money, the fans were overheard debating whether that was the best Chard hockey performance ever witnessed at Holyrood.
