match report

A last minute goal denied Chard a win which their second half performance merited and which would have cemented the third place in the league they occupied going into the fixture.

Lowly Bridgwater started with far greater purpose than Chard , the first two minutes seeing them miss a golden opportunity in front of goal and then Luke Bradshaw save another effort from close range. Chard had hardly set foot in the visitors' D before they were a goal down on six minutes, a well taken flick shot from a penalty corner high into the net beating both Bradshaw and defenders.

For the first quarter of the game, Chard remained on the back foot. Their best effort fell to George Criddle after Flynn Bowie announced his arrival from the bench with a fine dribble into the D. Criddle was to make amends for not making the most of that opportunity when, in the 24th minute, he conjured an equaliser with a deft turn and reverse stick shot across the keeper into the corner of the goal. This proved to be the catalyst for Chard to take the initiative for the rest of the first half. Arthur Handley's surging run from midfield set up Joel Handsford to fire just wide, Handsford had another on target effort saved and George Parris and Criddle both had chances from further penalty corners as Bridgwater were put under concerted pressure. However, the visitors issued a reminder of their own threat going forward just before half time with a swift break creating a chance which the alert Bradshaw did well to save.

Bridgwater were again the faster out of the blocks at the restart, Bradshaw helping over the bar another flick shot from an early penalty corner to avoid a repeat of the opening minutes of the first half. But Chard roused themselves more quickly to the challenge this time and a steady build up of attacking momentum produced dividends at the midpoint of the half. Criddle and Parris both came close to putting Chard ahead from a penalty corner and, just a minute later, Gary Wheaton drilled the ball into the centre of the D for Isaac Parris to test the keeper and for Handsford to put in the rebound. Ollie Bartlett then made a well timed run down the right wing before delivering a perfectly placed pass to Handsford who failed to make contact with the ball with the goal at his mercy. As the visitors' defence struggled to stem the tide, Wheaton set up the youngest of the Parris trio on the pitch with another chance saved by the keeper and this time Handsford's follow up was just off target.

Having been penned in for so long, Bridgwater broke and earned a final penalty corner which required another Bradshaw save, but Chard then looked set to ride out the last moments of the game keeping the ball in their opponents' half. Even a last Bridgwater counterattack seemed to have been contained as Paul Sainsbury put in a well timed tackle having shepherded the threat to the backline, but a moment of hesitancy and confusion between defender and keeper allowed the visitors to poach an equaliser for a share of the spoils.

Thanks to umpires Jim Sainsbury and Trevor Goss.
